Learn Norwegian online, from A1 to B1

Norsk from A1 to B1, for work, residence and citizenship.

What you get: The Norwegian programme has 5 modules with 57 lessons (about 13 hours of study), 22 marked practice sets and 3 tests, including 2 full mock tests. Lessons, practice and the free placement test are free with an Al Noor account; the mock tests and marked feedback on writing and speaking come with the full programme.

Norwegian (Bokmål) from first words to B1, aligned with Norskprøven: grammar explained in English, practice and recordings in Norwegian, writing and speaking marked in Norwegian, a free placement test, and two full mock tests.

About the test

Norskprøven, the Norwegian test run by HK-dir, has four parts — reading, listening, writing and speaking — and documents levels from A1 to B2, with a separate test at C1. Reading and listening start with a short test everyone takes; for writing and speaking you choose the level when you register: A1–A2, A2–B1 or B1–B2. Permanent residence asks for a speaking test at A2 or higher (for police appointments from 1 September 2025) and a social studies test; citizenship asks for B1 speaking and the citizenship test or the social studies test, taken in Norwegian.

Tests and mocks

Questions about Norwegian

What Norwegian level do I need for permanent residence?

A speaking test at A2 or higher if your police appointment is on or after 1 September 2025, and a social studies test. The rules apply to applicants aged 18 to 67; check UDI's current rules for your case.

What Norwegian level do I need for citizenship?

A speaking test at B1 or higher, and the citizenship test (statsborgerprøven) or the social studies test, taken in Norwegian. Check UDI's current rules before you apply.

Do the mock tests follow Norskprøven?

Yes, they follow its four parts: reading, listening, writing and speaking. Prøvetest 1 is at A1–A2 and Prøvetest 2 at A2–B1. Writing and speaking are marked in Norwegian.

Do I need to know any of the language already?

No. The course starts with the alphabet, greetings and numbers, with Roman and Urdu pronunciation guides and an English meaning under every phrase. You can turn the guides off as you improve.

Are the explanations in English?

Yes. Grammar is explained in English, and everything you hear, read and write in practice is in the language you are learning. Writing and speaking are marked in that language, with comments in English.
