Children in Norway can go to a barnehage (kindergarten) and start school in the year they turn six. School lasts ten years: barneskole for years 1 to 7 and ungdomsskole for years 8 to 10. Most young people then go on to videregående skole (upper secondary school), on a general programme or a vocational one that can lead to a fagbrev (a trade certificate). After that come høyskole and universitet.
