Velferdsstaten: NAV, helse og skatt (the welfare state)
What tax pays for, what NAV does, sick pay, the GP and the frikort — and the words in letters about them.

The welfare state is paid for with taxes. Everyone who works pays tax, and everyone has access to health care, school and support when they cannot work. A few things every newcomer meets:
- NAV pays, among other things, dagpenger (unemployment benefit), sykepenger (sick pay), foreldrepenger (parental pay), barnetrygd (child benefit) and pensjon.
NAV Say nav ناو Means: NAV, the Norwegian Labour and Welfare Administration dagpenger Say dagpehnguhr داگپےنگَر Means: unemployment benefit sykepenger Say suekehpehnguhr سیُکےپےنگَر Means: sick pay foreldrepenger Say fooruhllrehpehnguhr فُورَللرےپےنگَر Means: parental pay barnetrygd Say barnuhtruegd بارنَتریُگد Means: child benefit pensjon Say pehnshoon پےنشُون Means: a pension - When you are off sick, your employer pays sick pay for the first sixteen days. After that, NAV pays.
- At the GP and for many other health services, you pay a share yourself, an egenandel, up to a ceiling each year. After that you get a frikort and pay nothing more that year.

Each spring, Skatteetaten sends you a skattemelding, which you must check.
