Cambridge O Level · Syllabus 5054
O Level Physics tutors who teach the mark scheme, not just the topic
Request a specialist for your syllabus and use a trial to check the teaching fit. Typically PKR 15,000–27,000 a month.
Quick answer
Cambridge O Level Physics (5054) is examined in three papers: a 40-mark multiple choice paper, a theory paper, and either a practical test or the alternative-to-practical paper. Al Noor Tuition matches students with O Level Physics specialists for one-to-one online lessons anywhere, or home tuition in Lahore, Karachi, Islamabad and other major cities, from PKR 15,000 a month with the first lesson free.
Physics is the O Level subject where being able to follow the lesson and being able to answer the paper are furthest apart. A student can understand what momentum is, watch the teacher work an example, agree with every step — and then lose most of the marks on the question because they did not state the principle, did not show the substitution, and did not carry the unit through.
That gap is what a good O Level Physics tutor closes. Not more explanation of the concept: more practice at converting what the student already understands into what the examiner has been told to award marks for.
How Cambridge O Level Physics is examined
Physics carries syllabus code 5054. Confirm the components your school has entered your child for before buying past papers — entries differ between schools and syllabuses are revised between cycles.
| Component | What it is |
|---|---|
| Paper 1 | Multiple choice, 40 questions, 40 marks, 1 hour. No negative marking, so every question is worth attempting. |
| Paper 2 | Theory, 75 marks, 1 hour 45 minutes. Section A is short structured questions on the whole syllabus; Section B offers a choice of longer questions. |
| Paper 3 or 4 | Paper 3 is a practical test taken in a laboratory; Paper 4 is the alternative to practical, a written paper about experiments. Schools enter students for one or the other. |
Where O Level Physics marks are actually lost
Definitions written from memory of the idea, not the wording
Cambridge awards definition marks against specific phrasing. "Force is mass times acceleration" does not earn the mark that "the resultant force acting on a body is equal to the rate of change of its momentum" does. We drill the twenty or so definitions that recur, in the exact form the mark scheme accepts.
Numericals with the answer right and the working absent
Most numerical questions carry three or four marks and only one of them is for the final number. A student who writes the answer alone and gets it wrong scores zero where a student who set out the formula, substitution and unit scores three. This is the single cheapest source of extra marks in the subject.
The alternative-to-practical paper treated as an afterthought
Paper 4 is not a physics paper so much as an experimental-method paper: reading instruments to the right precision, identifying the variable that was not controlled, explaining why a repeat reading matters. Students who have never been taught it explicitly lose marks on questions that require no physics at all.
What a term of O Level Physics tutoring looks like
- 1
Weeks 1–2: find out where it actually broke
A diagnostic past paper, marked strictly against the mark scheme rather than generously. Almost always the result is narrower than the family expected — a student "bad at physics" is usually specifically bad at moments, or at circuits, or at converting units.
- 2
The teaching term: topic, then topical past papers
Each topic is taught and then immediately drilled with topical past-paper questions from several sessions, so the student meets the same idea in the four or five disguises Cambridge uses for it.
- 3
The last eight weeks: whole papers, timed
Full papers under exam timing, marked and returned with the mark scheme, plus explicit work on the practical paper. Pace is a skill of its own and it is learned late or not at all.
Topics covered
- Kinematics and motion graphs
- Forces, moments and equilibrium
- Work, energy and power
- Thermal physics and kinetic theory
- Waves, light and sound
- Electricity and circuits
- Magnetism and electromagnetism
- Atomic and nuclear physics

Before booking a O Level Physics tutor
- Confirm syllabus 5054, the examination year and the assessment route with your school.
- Bring marked work so the tutor can identify a specific learning gap and explain a plan.
- Check the teacher’s relevant experience and ask the student to attempt a fresh task during the trial.
- Agree weekly lesson time, independent practice, progress review and the actual fee.

O Level Physics tutoring — your questions answered
How much does an O Level Physics tutor cost in Pakistan?
One-to-one O Level Physics tuition is typically PKR 15,000–27,000 a month for two to three lessons a week, depending on the tutor's experience and whether lessons are online or at home. Small-batch lessons cost less, usually PKR 10,000–15,000. The first lesson with an Al Noor tutor is free, so a family can judge the fit before paying anything.
Is it too late to start physics tuition six months before the exam?
No, and six months is more than many students get. What changes is the plan: there is no time to reteach the syllabus from the start, so the work becomes a diagnostic paper, a ranked list of the topics costing the most marks, and then those topics taught and drilled in order of how many marks they are worth. Students commonly move a full grade in a term this way.
Can O Level Physics be taught properly online?
Yes. Physics is taught on paper and a shared digital whiteboard reproduces that exactly — the tutor works the numerical in front of the student, line by line, and the student works the next one while the tutor watches. Al Noor lessons can be recorded free on request, so a student can replay the derivation they lost the thread of rather than trying to remember it.
Do your tutors cover the practical paper?
Yes — both Paper 3 and Paper 4, though most students in Pakistan sit Paper 4. It is taught as a distinct skill: precision of readings, control of variables, sources of error, and how to phrase an improvement so it earns the mark. Syllabus codes and paper structures change between cycles — check your school entry against the current syllabus before buying past papers.
