Cambridge IGCSE · Syllabus 0580
IGCSE Maths tutors — and an honest answer about Core vs Extended
Request a specialist for your syllabus and use a trial to check the teaching fit. Typically PKR 15,000–27,000 a month.
Quick answer
Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics (0580) is tiered: Core candidates sit Papers 1 and 3 and can achieve a maximum of grade C, while Extended candidates sit Papers 2 and 4 and can achieve up to A*. The tier decision is made by the school, often early, and it caps what a student can achieve — so it is worth reviewing. Al Noor Tuition matches students with IGCSE Maths specialists online and at home.
The most consequential thing about IGCSE Mathematics is not a topic, it is the tier. Core caps a student at a C. That is a sensible safety net for some students and a quiet ceiling for others, and once the entry is made it is difficult to undo late in the year.
Families are frequently unaware the decision has been taken. A tutor's first job is often simply to assess honestly whether a student is capable of Extended with support — and, if they are, to make the case to the school while there is still time.
How Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics is examined
Mathematics carries syllabus code 0580. Confirm the components your school has entered your child for before buying past papers — entries differ between schools and syllabuses are revised between cycles.
| Component | What it is |
|---|---|
| Paper 1 (Core) | Non-calculator paper for the 2025–2027 syllabus, worth 50%. Core entry gives access to grades C to G. |
| Paper 3 (Core) | Calculator paper for the 2025–2027 syllabus, worth 50%. |
| Paper 2 (Extended) | Non-calculator paper for the 2025–2027 syllabus, worth 50%. Extended entry gives access to grades A* to E. |
| Paper 4 (Extended) | Calculator paper for the 2025–2027 syllabus, worth 50%. |
| Additional Mathematics (0606) | A separate syllabus covering calculus and advanced algebra, taken alongside by students heading for A Level Mathematics. |
Where IGCSE Mathematics marks are actually lost
Extended students prepared on Core material
The topics unique to Extended — functions, calculus of simple polynomials, advanced trigonometry, set notation — are precisely where A and A* grades are decided, and they are the ones most easily skipped when a class is taught to the middle.
Working omitted in Paper 4
The calculator paper still needs clear mathematical working. Show the method and retain sufficient precision until the final answer, rather than relying on a bare calculator result.
Non-calculator practice skipped
For 2025–2027, Papers 1 and 2 do not allow calculators; Papers 3 and 4 require a scientific calculator. Practise both hand methods and accurate calculator use for the confirmed tier.
What a term of IGCSE Mathematics tutoring looks like
- 1
Week 1: settle the tier question
An honest assessment against Extended past papers, and a conversation with the family about what the entry allows. Nothing else in the year matters as much.
- 2
The teaching term: Extended topics first
The Extended-only content is taught early while there is time to absorb it, rather than rushed at the end when it is worth the most.
- 3
The last eight weeks: two papers, two techniques
Practise the non-calculator Paper 2 and calculator Paper 4 under the correct conditions. Both are equally weighted in the 2025–2027 syllabus.
Topics covered
- Number, ratio and percentages
- Algebra, equations and inequalities
- Functions and graphs (Extended)
- Trigonometry and Pythagoras
- Mensuration and geometry
- Vectors and transformations
- Probability and statistics
- Introductory calculus (Extended and 0606)

Before booking a IGCSE Mathematics tutor
- Confirm syllabus 0580, the examination year and the assessment route with your school.
- Bring marked work so the tutor can identify a specific learning gap and explain a plan.
- Check the teacher’s relevant experience and ask the student to attempt a fresh task during the trial.
- Agree weekly lesson time, independent practice, progress review and the actual fee.

IGCSE Mathematics tutoring — your questions answered
My child is entered for Core — can they move to Extended?
Often yes, if the question is raised early enough. Entries are made months before the exam and schools will usually reconsider on the evidence of Extended past-paper performance. It is one of the most valuable things a tutor can do in the first month, because a Core entry caps the grade at C regardless of how well the student ends up performing.
What is the difference between IGCSE and O Level Maths?
They are separate Cambridge qualifications. IGCSE 0580 is tiered; in the 2025–2027 syllabus, Core uses Papers 1 and 3 and Extended uses Papers 2 and 4. Each route includes a non-calculator and a calculator paper. Confirm the school entry and any recognition requirements for the student’s next stage.
How much does an IGCSE Maths tutor cost?
PKR 15,000–27,000 a month one-to-one, with the first lesson free. Families overseas are usually taught online by the same Pakistan-based specialists at the same rates.
Should my child also take Additional Mathematics (0606)?
If A Level Mathematics or engineering is the plan, it is a substantial head start — the first term of A Level Maths becomes revision rather than new material. If not, a strong 0580 Extended grade is the better use of the time.
