Cambridge A Level · Syllabus 9701

A Level Chemistry tutors for the mechanisms and the maths

Request a specialist for your syllabus and use a trial to check the teaching fit. Typically PKR 18,000–35,000 a month.

Quick answer

Cambridge A Level Chemistry (9701) is examined across five papers: AS multiple choice and structured, advanced practical, A2 structured, and a planning, analysis and evaluation paper. The two places students lose most are organic mechanisms and the quantitative topics — equilibria, kinetics and electrochemistry. Al Noor Tuition matches students with 9701 specialists online or at home from PKR 18,000 a month.

A Level Chemistry separates students along a line that was invisible at O Level: whether they can hold a mechanism in their head and apply it to a molecule they have never met. Below that line, organic chemistry becomes an ever-growing list to memorise and the subject becomes impossible in the second year.

The other half of the difficulty is quantitative. Equilibria, kinetics, Born–Haber cycles and electrochemistry demand comfortable algebra and logarithms, and students who have avoided that comfort find that chemistry, not mathematics, is where it finally catches them.

How Cambridge A Level Chemistry is examined

Chemistry carries syllabus code 9701. Confirm the components your school has entered your child for before buying past papers — entries differ between schools and syllabuses are revised between cycles.

ComponentWhat it is
Paper 1AS multiple choice, covering the AS syllabus with a significant quantitative element.
Paper 2AS structured questions.
Paper 3Advanced practical skills in a laboratory — titrations, rates, qualitative analysis of unknowns.
Paper 4A2 structured questions: organic synthesis and mechanisms, equilibria, electrochemistry, transition elements.
Paper 5Planning, analysis and evaluation — experimental design and data treatment on paper, with uncertainties.

Where A Level Chemistry marks are actually lost

Mechanisms drawn without curly arrows meaning anything

Marks are awarded for arrows starting at the right electron pair and ending at the right atom. Students who draw a plausible-looking picture score nothing. Taught properly, the same small set of arrow-pushing rules covers the whole syllabus.

Synthesis routes memorised route by route

A2 asks students to devise a route between two compounds they have not seen paired before. That is only possible with a map of functional-group interconversions, which has to be built deliberately over the year.

Quantitative topics avoided

Kinetics, equilibria and Born–Haber cycles are where the marks are densest and where nervous students spend the least time. Avoidance is visible in every mock and is entirely fixable with drilling.

What a term of A Level Chemistry tutoring looks like

  1. 1

    Weeks 1–3: arrows and algebra

Mechanistic reasoning and the mathematics of equilibria taught up front, because everything in the second year rests on both.

  2. 2

The teaching year: build the synthesis map

Every organic reaction is added to one growing map of functional-group conversions rather than recorded as a separate fact, so the student ends the year able to plan a route rather than recall one.

  3. 3

The final term: papers and Paper 5

Timed practice of all components, with dedicated planning-and-evaluation sessions, marked against the published mark schemes.

Topics covered

  • Atomic structure and bonding
  • Moles, titrations and stoichiometry
  • Energetics and Born–Haber cycles
  • Kinetics and equilibria
  • Electrochemistry and redox
  • Organic mechanisms and synthesis
  • Analytical techniques and spectroscopy
  • Transition elements

Before booking a A Level Chemistry tutor

  1. Confirm syllabus 9701, the examination year and the assessment route with your school.
  2. Bring marked work so the tutor can identify a specific learning gap and explain a plan.
  3. Check the teacher’s relevant experience and ask the student to attempt a fresh task during the trial.
  4. Agree weekly lesson time, independent practice, progress review and the actual fee.

A Level Chemistry tutoring — your questions answered

Is A Level Chemistry much harder than O Level?

Yes, and unusually so in one specific way: organic chemistry stops being memorisable. Students who scored well at O Level by learning reactions as a list hit a wall in the second year. Learning mechanisms early is the difference between a hard subject and an impossible one.

My child wants to study medicine — how much does the Chemistry grade matter?

A great deal. Chemistry is the near-universal requirement for medicine and pharmacy, and it is the subject that most often decides whether an application is competitive. It is also the most common reason students repeat a year.

How much does A Level Chemistry tuition cost?

PKR 18,000–35,000 a month one-to-one. The first lesson is free, and lessons can be recorded free on request so a mechanism can be replayed rather than half-remembered.

Can one tutor cover Chemistry, Physics and Biology?

Rarely, and we would rather say so. At A Level the subjects have diverged too far for most teachers to be genuinely strong in all three. We usually match separate specialists and keep them coordinated through the same LMS timetable, so the family still has one point of contact.
