Where A Level Physics marks are actually lost

It tests a repeatable method — identify variables, describe the procedure, linearise the relationship, propagate uncertainties — that can be taught in six focused lessons. Students who leave it late routinely lose an entire grade to a paper that requires no new physics.
Uncertainties treated as an afterthought
Percentage uncertainty, absolute uncertainty and their propagation appear in Papers 2, 4 and 5. A student who has never been drilled on them loses marks in three separate papers for the same gap.
AS content assumed to be finished
A2 papers assume AS material completely. Students who "did" kinematics and fields in the first year and never revisited them find A2 questions unanswerable for reasons that have nothing to do with A2.

The type of question. O Level questions test one idea at a time and reward accurate reproduction; A Level questions combine several and reward problem-solving when the route is not obvious. It is a genuinely different skill, it catches out strong students in particular, and it responds well to being taught directly rather than waited out.
How important is Paper 5 really?
It carries enough weight to move a final grade on its own, and it is the paper least taught in schools because it needs no laboratory and no content. For students who are otherwise solid, targeted Paper 5 work is the highest-return tutoring available in the subject.
