Where O Level Computer Science marks are actually lost
Pseudocode written as Python
Cambridge publishes its own pseudocode conventions and the mark scheme expects them. A student who writes fluent Python in the answer booklet loses marks for syntax they consider irrelevant — and they are right that it is irrelevant to programming and wrong that it is irrelevant to the exam.
Trace tables filled in by running the code mentally
Trace table questions are pure marks for students who fill a row per iteration and pure loss for students who try to hold the values in their head. It is a discipline, taught in one lesson and worth marks in every paper.
Binary and hex practised until "understood" rather than until fast
Conversion questions are guaranteed and quick marks, but only for a student who can do them without thinking. Understanding the method is not the same as being fluent at it under time.

Does my child need to know Python before starting?
No. The exam is written in Cambridge pseudocode by hand, and many strong candidates learn programming from scratch during the course. Python is useful for checking that an algorithm works, and we teach it alongside, but it is not a prerequisite.
My child codes well but scores badly — what is going wrong?
Almost always pseudocode conventions and trace tables. The programming ability is real; the exam is testing a formal notation and a method of working on paper that a self-taught coder has never had to use. This is one of the fastest grade improvements available in any O Level subject.
