A six-week plan, and how to use the mock tests
What to study each week, and how to learn from a mock.
10 minutes · A free lesson from Start here
This course has a lesson and two marked practice sets for every part of OET, a free diagnostic, and two full mock tests, each in a nursing and a medicine version: Listening and Reading are the same in both, and Writing and Speaking follow your profession, as in the real test.
| Week | Focus |
|---|---|
| 1 | The free diagnostic and the Start here lessons, then Listening Part A and Reading Part A |
| 2 | Listening Parts B and C, and Reading Parts B and C: both practice sets for each part |
| 3 | Writing: the letter, selecting case notes, letter types and letter language — write two letters and compare them with the models |
| 4 | Speaking: the role-play lessons — record yourself on all four practice role-plays |
| 5 | Mock Test 1 in your profession, in one sitting, then a careful review of every mistake |
| 6 | Revise your weakest part, then Mock Test 2 |
Lesson quiz
Check what you have learned. Choose an answer to see whether it is right, and why.
Quick check: About how many marks out of 42 has a B typically needed in OET Listening?
- About 20
- All 42
- About 30
Show the answer
C: About 30 — OET adjusts the grade boundaries slightly for each test, so treat 30 as a benchmark, not a guarantee.
Quick check: What is the best way to sit a mock test?
- A few questions a day
- In one sitting, timed, without pausing
- With the answers open beside you
Show the answer
B: In one sitting, timed, without pausing — Only a timed, uninterrupted sitting tells you how you would do on the day.
Quick check: After a mock, what should you do with your mistakes?
- Sort them by cause, then fix the cause
- Take another mock straight away
- Learn the right answers by heart
Show the answer
A: Sort them by cause, then fix the cause — Didn't hear or find it, misunderstood the question, or wrote it wrongly: each needs a different fix.
Quick check: Which mock version should a nurse take?
- The medicine version
- The nursing version
- Either: they are identical
Show the answer
B: The nursing version — Listening and Reading are shared; Writing and Speaking follow your profession, as in the real test.
